In December 2009, a coalition of student groups including the Columbia College Student Council, Columbia Queer Alliance, Engineering Student Council, Everyone Allied Against Homophobia, and GendeRevolution submitted a proposal for gender-neutral housing to Columbia University administrators. The proposal would allow any two students, regardless of sex or gender, to live in a double occupancy room in any Columbia residence hall. The policy would only apply to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors who chose to room together (blind doubles would still be single-sex). The policy seeks to create more options in the room selection process so that ALL students are able to find a compatible roommate, and would ease tensions felt by gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer students who struggle to find safe and comfortable living spaces under the current housing requirements. Columbia’s administration has decided to delay the implementation of this policy, and is no longer considering a pilot program for the 2010-2011 school year. We will not accept this conclusion, and we will continue to advocate for all rooms to be gender neutral. Make your voice heard by signing the petition.
TELL COLUMBIA ADMINISTRATORS THAT YOU SUPPORT GENDER-NEUTRAL HOUSING.
